| Why Memorise Constellations |
| |
Anyone interested in the night sky is greatly benefited by knowing their way around the stars.
Being able to identify stars and the planets which wander amongst them not only impresses friends, but also helps to find the way to other interesting objects such as the Andromeda Galaxy or the beautiful Hercules and Omega Centauri star clusters.
Amateur astronomers search for elusive faint objects and are guided by star charts. Having a good memory of the star patterns is an essential aid to stellar navigation. The art of finding one's way to an object by moving from more easily to less easily identified stars is called star hopping.
The constellations form a convenient reference in the night sky. Stars are indeed named according to the constellation in which they happen to lie. So it stands to reason that having the relative positions of the constellations at your mental fingertips speeds up star-hopping. No need to repeatedly refer back to the star chart.
Building the constellation jigsaw puzzle repeatedly until the positions are fixed in memory greatly improves familiarity with the night sky. Regular refresher puzzle building every few months helps to keep the memory fresh.
